A scene from last year's tree-planting event

The Sakura Tree Avenue Project is an activity to plant cherry trees at the destination of the tsunami that occurred in Tohoku during the Great East Japan Earthquake. At a tree-planting event held by Ogavitz and the Sakura Namiki Network in March last year, about 100 people gathered in the Jusanhama Oiha district of Kitakami-cho, Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, which was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and planted 56 cherry tree saplings from the Ogavits.

This year, which marks the fourth year since participating in the activity, on Saturday, March 26, a cherry blossom planting event will be held in the Otohama district of Soma-gun, Fukushima Prefecture (36 of the 70 units in the Otohama area were affected) with the participation of many fashion brands.
In addition, this year as well, we will release products that support the "Sakura Namiki Project" from each fashion brand that supports this project. Support products will be tagged with a hanging tag, and 10 yen will be donated to the NPO Sakura Namiki Network. On August 29, 2015, we donated 995,130 yen (equivalent to 50 sakura seedlings). To date, 30 fashion brands have endorsed and participated in this project.

■What is the "Ogavitz Project" developed by Toyoshima & Co., Ltd.?
The organic cotton promotion project in which the largest number of apparel brands in the Japan participate. With the idea of "reversal" to deliver 100% products to 100 times more people without sticking to 100% organic cotton, about 90 brands are currently participating and producing about 900,000 items a year. These activities have expanded to support farmers and NPOs in the country of origin, and the circle is expanding as a social contribution activity where people can participate in fashionable fashion through a single piece of clothing.
Cotton produced by conventional cultivation methods contains about 15% of the insecticides and 7% of pesticides used around the world (*Source: Textile Exchange), and contains various problems such as soil contamination and environmental problems. Organic cotton, on the other hand, refers to organically grown cotton on farmland that has not used any pesticides or chemical fertilizers for more than three years. The growing demand for organic cotton is expected to reduce the use of conventional cotton cultivation methods and improve the above problems.

■NPO Sakura Namiki Network
The Sakura Namiki Project is a project promoted by the NPO Sakura Namiki Network. The Great East Japan Earthquake, which struck suddenly on March 11, 2011, was a catastrophe that left more than 20,000 people dead and missing. The Tohoku region has experienced many major disasters caused by tsunamis in the past, but unfortunately we were unable to make use of the lessons learned and caused unprecedented damage. Looking back on history, a major tsunami always comes to Sanriku once every 100 years. It is necessary to pass on the story of this massive tsunami from generation to generation, and to make efforts to ensure that the damage never fades away. In the hope that it will serve as a "evacuation" goal in the event of a major tsunami predicted in the future and play a role in protecting residents, we have decided to plant cherry blossoms at the destination of the tsunami to create a memorable row of cherry blossom trees. The "Sakura Tree Avenue Project" was launched by the strong desire of the people of Tohoku to plant cherry trees and the volunteers involved in flowers. We started planting trees in the spring of 2012, and to date we have planted about 3,500 cherry trees in Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate prefectures.
