Contributing to society through one piece of clothing, Japan's largest promotion project for organic cotton

About 100 brands currently participate in the activity, which began with donating a portion of the amount of money for each collaboration product with a brand participating in the project to an organization that supports cotton farmers. Today, in addition to supporting production areas, we are expanding our activities to support charity organizations such as NPOs that are active in various fields such as the environment, welfare, developing country support, and reconstruction in Japan and overseas. It is one of the largest apparel brand participation projects in Japan, collecting donations from a total of over 7.2 million items so far. Orgabits is a project to popularize organic cotton that is friendly to the global environment and producers and started in 2005. The main theme is that the people who make and buy a piece of clothing have an awareness of environmental and social issues, such as soil contamination and health damage to farmers, which are problems in the production process of cotton, which is the raw material of fashion products.

In addition to the spread of organic cotton, we support groups that are active in various fields such as protecting marine life, supporting developing countries, and providing psychological care for sick children. This time, through products with each brand, we donated a total of 5,416,820 yen in donations collected over a year from 2018 to seven organizations.

On August 29th, the Orgabits Day, which was the day of the presentation of donations, we held a thank-you event to which we invited the staff of support groups nationwide. The NPO Sakura Namiki Network, which conducts cherry blossom tree planting activities to prevent the Great East Japan Earthquake from fading, has reached a total of 10 million yen in donations this time. Co-Representative Director Koike, who attended the event, said, "We have been able to plant a total of about 260 cherry trees through the activities of Orgabits so far. We want to protect these cherry trees for generations to come."

In addition, the Japan CliniClowns Association, which provides psychological care for sick children, said, "There are families who came to a charity event wearing Orgabits T-shirts after they were discharged from the hospital. New opportunities that were not there before are being created,” he commented.

What is the Orgabits Project?

"Orgabits" is an organic cotton spread project that started in 2005 with the idea that everyone should contribute "a little" to the global environment and producers. In order to make it easier for organic cotton to be used and popularized, we have a “reversal idea” to deliver 10% organic cotton products to 100 times more people, regardless of the amount of organic cotton used in one piece of clothing. 100 fashion brands have participated, producing more than 7.2 million items in total. The activity has expanded to support farmers in the country of origin of organic cotton and NPO corporations, and the circle of social contribution activities that you can participate in on a daily basis through one piece of clothing is also expanding. About 15% of the world's pesticides and about 7% of the pesticides used* are used* in the cultivation of cotton, which is used as a raw material for clothing. Environmental and social issues are intertwined. On the other hand, organic cotton is cotton that has been organically grown on farmland that has not used pesticides or chemical fertilizers for more than three years. The widespread use of organic cotton is expected to reduce the use of conventional cotton cultivation methods and improve the problems in the world's growing regions.
